Today’s blog post is all about my signature mint julep mocktail recipe, a refreshing drink that is perfect for warm spring days, summer afternoons, and especially Kentucky Derby season. If you’ve ever had a mint julep, then you already know how refreshing this classic Southern drink can be. Traditionally served during the Kentucky Derby, the mint julep is known for its bright mint flavor, cooling sweetness, and elegant simplicity.

My version is a non-alcoholic mint julep mocktail that captures the same refreshing flavor while remaining light, elegant, and easy to prepare. It’s perfect for Derby watch parties, garden gatherings, brunch on the terrace, or relaxing afternoons when you want something cool and refreshing. This recipe was inspired by my favorite mint julep from Disneyland, and I recreated the flavor at home so it can be enjoyed anytime.

Why are Mint Juleps the Official Kentucky Derby Drink?
The mint julep has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby for over a century, with more than 120,000 mint juleps served every year at Churchill Downs during Derby weekend.
Because of this tradition, mint juleps have become one of the most popular drinks for Derby watch parties, Southern-inspired gatherings, and elegant spring entertaining.
This mocktail version keeps the refreshing mint flavor while making it perfect for guests of all ages.

Mint Julep Mocktail Recipe
Ingredients (1 Pitcher)
- 6 oz lemonade concentrate (thawed)
- ¼ cup lime juice (fresh or bottled)
- ½ cup homemade peppermint syrup (recipe below)
- 5 tablespoons simple syrup
- 4–5 cups cold water
- Plenty of ice
- Fresh mint leaves, for garnish
Ingredients I Personally Use
For this recipe, I usually order lemonade concentrate from Amazon Fresh, which makes it very easy to keep the ingredients on hand.
Fresh mint is one of the key ingredients in a great mint julep. I’m lucky to have mint growing in my backyard, so I simply pick a few fresh sprigs whenever I make this drink. Fresh mint always gives the best flavor and aroma.
If you don’t grow mint at home, you can easily find it in most grocery stores in the fresh herbs section.

Peppermint Syrup (Homemade Crème de Menthe–Style)
This syrup is what gives the drink its signature minty sweetness.
Ingredients
- 1½ cups sugar
- 1½ cups water
- 1½ teaspoons peppermint extract
Instructions
In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and water.
Warm gently over low heat until the sugar dissolves completely.
Remove from heat and stir in the peppermint extract.
Allow the syrup to cool fully before using. Store in the refrigerator.
The syrup will keep well for 1–2 weeks and can also be used in teas, lemonades, or desserts.
How to Make the Mint Julep Mocktail
- In a large glass pitcher, combine the lemonade concentrate, lime juice, peppermint syrup, and simple syrup.
- Add 4–5 cups of cold water, depending on how strong or sweet you prefer the drink.
- Stir gently and add a generous amount of ice.
- Taste and adjust the sweetness if needed by adding a little more simple syrup.
- Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
No cherries. No extras.
Simplicity is elegance.

Tips for the Perfect Mint Julep Mocktail
Use fresh mint whenever possible
Fresh mint makes a huge difference in both flavor and aroma.
Chill the pitcher beforehand
A chilled glass pitcher helps keep the drink refreshing for longer.
Adjust sweetness to your taste
Some people prefer a sweeter julep, while others enjoy a more citrus-forward flavor. Simply adjust the simple syrup accordingly.
When to Serve a Mint Julep
This mint julep mocktail is perfect for:
- Kentucky Derby parties

- Outdoor entertaining
- Afternoon drinks on the terrace
Because it’s alcohol-free, it’s also a great option for guests of all ages.
